What is a Ditsy print pattern design?

Ditsy florals or Ditzy florals are a type of print where the elements of the print look randomly scattered. The Ditsy print doesn’t typically follow a linear or alternate grid pattern. This makes it “ditsy,” just like the name suggests. If you think about surface pattern design for fashion and textile applications, ditsy florals are surely one of the classics. Ditsy doesn’t always have to be florals but that is how this pattern started. Any element goes! Creating unique surface patterns using hand-drawn elements is easy to make with the ditsy pattern. As long as it is scaled to be relatively tiny and the elements form a scatter pattern.

Where did the Ditsy print pattern design come from?

Ditsy prints inspired by the Indienne (Indian) traditional floral prints

A ditsy print surface pattern design is very likely inspired by the Indienne floral prints. The Indienne floral print comes from floral printing styles that the Europeans adopted from India in the 16th and 17th centuries. Ditsy Florals resemble old Indian floral block prints that even dated far back to 2000 BC.

Ditsy Prints in Illustration and Graphic Design:

It doesn’t matter how old an art or design style is because it is never too late for a revival. Surface pattern design has seen a revival of florals in the last 10 years and it looks like florals are here to stay. Ditsy prints became popular in fashion design and even textile design. All it takes is creating miniature elements and then making a random seamless pattern in Adobe Photoshop. There are many applications like Photoshop, Procreate, Adobe Fresco and Vectornator that have tutorials to create seamless patterns for beginners. Simply follow a tutorial for a randomised pattern.

A ditsy print surface pattern design works well as a background. They look attractive and somehow do not steal too much attention. Elements like fruits, quirky icons, flat illustrations, or hand-drawn elements can look lovely as a ditsy print. Fun elements and the clever use of colour theory in textile pattern design can make a versatile print.
